Windows Mobile 6.5
By Valiant on Feb 18, 2009 in Article, Feature, Hardware, Microsoft, Technology, Tutorial, handphone
I guess everyone knows I purchased SonyEricsson Xperia X1 last year. But as usual I still in doubt, until I brought it overseas. Its very very useful. Everything are in there… video call, gps, camera, video recorder, media player, internet,… everything work as out of the box… I don’t want to give any bias opinion so you can have a read about the review here http://blog.se-nse.net/reviews/sony-ericsson-xperia-x1-review/
But this post is not about Xperia. Its about Windows Mobile 6.5. Before I start, I just want to let you know that there are 4 parts of the story here. I also not going to give you download link or specific steps on how to do it, since I don’t know whether its legal or not. But, buzz me and I’ll let you know where to go.
The parts are:
-
Don’t use SonyEricsson Update Services yet.
-
Upgrade to Xperia R2A Firmware.
-
Upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5.
-
Revert back to Windows Mobile 6.1.
Before we begin my Xperia was preloaded with:
-
Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro
-
X1i Generic UK R1AA017 firmware
Don’t use SonyEricsson Update Services
According to most people, that software spec is the latest and fix most of Xperia’s bugs. I don’t convince, so I use SonyEricsson Update Services to find out new software for my phone. Well, there is no update.
But I saw a Continue button, so I just click it… then turn out it restore my phone to the factory state settings. Everything gone… Moral of the story don’t use the utility yet.
I figure, since my phone already empty, why don’t I just play along with it. After all, most of BlogZero’s crew is a bit crazy… I know my phone is still new, but where is the fun if you just want to keep it as virgin… we need to put a little adventure into it… right?
Upgrade to Xperia R2A Firmware
Just like iPhone, Xperia is capable to be hack or crack or flash or jailbrake. Out of the box its already jailbroken, but you might want to debrand it; just want to play with its ROM, etc. For my case; I know there is R2AA008 firmware but its not available through SEUS but through EMMA. Steps here are not detail, buzz me for more info.
-
Part 1
-
Download the new firmware.
-
Run X1_HardSPL.exe and follow the instruction.
-
Management screen (4 colors screen) on the phone come out, then progress bar, then you phone restart.
-
-
Part 2
-
Next put the new firmware into the root of your memory stick and rename it to Kovsimg.nbh
-
Unplug the usb and turn off your phone.
-
Remove & re-insert battery.
-
Press and hold volume down button & power button until management screen show up, then release.
-
Progress bar, then your phone restart.
-
Congratulations on the new firmware
-
Well… its too simple… lets make it even difficult… lets upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5
Upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5
Windows Mobile 6.5 is not yet release until Q3 of this year, but the beta is already released to select tester. Just like above, I’m going to do a prep step first – even though you don’t really have to do this. Steps here are not detail, buzz me for more info.
-
Part 1
-
Download Windows Mobile 6.5 firmware
-
Download ruusigned_072stockspl
-
Run X1_HardSPL.exe but don’t click next
-
Copy/overwrite RUU_Signed.nbh (stockspl) earlier to the folder where your X1_HardSPL.exe is
-
Then continue click next
-
Management screen (4 colors screen) on the phone come out, then progress bar, then you phone restart.
-
-
Part 2
-
Rename the new firmware you just downloaded to RUU_Signed.nbh. Make sure the new firmware is inside ROMUpdateUtility.exe
-
Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe and follow the instruction
-
Management screen (4 colors screen) on the phone come out, then progress bar, then you phone restart.
-
It then restart then… voila… new Windows Mobile 6.5
-
Well…. WinMo 6.5 is cool and somewhat good with alot of improvement. But for me, I still prefer speed performance. No complaint as it is still in beta and the firmware is not built in 100% for Xperia yet….
So, let go back to WinMo 6.1 shall we?
Revert back to Windows Mobile 6.1
So, this shouldn’t be too difficult right? Make sure you download the firmware first. But since I got the previous firmware and the tools that I need, I basically don’t have to download anything. Steps here are not detail, buzz me for more info.
-
Part 1
-
Copy/overwrite RUU_Signed.nbh (stockspl) earlier into the same folder as ROMUpdateUtility.exe
-
Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe and follow the instruction
-
Then you’ll see a progress bar.
-
It then restart and boot up to your Windows Mobile 6.5 as per normal.
-
-
Part 2
-
Next put the WinMo 6.1 firmware into the root of your memory stick and rename it to Kovsimg.nbh
-
Unplug the usb and turn off your phone.
-
Remove & re-insert battery.
-
Press and hold volume down button & power button until management screen show up, then release.
-
Congratulations on the WinMo 6.1 R2AA008 firmware
-
That’s all for now folks… happy flashing…

Windows Mobile 6.5 can be downloaded for Beta Select User from Microsoft. If you dont have an invitation, perhaps you can go to this website:

…and look for:
Touch-IT Windows Mobile 6.5 Beta 2 – WM6.5 for Xperia
