Ubuntu 7.10

I am a TOTAL NEWBIE on this Ubuntu 7.10. Well, I have to admit that I have been using Microsoft for most of my life up to when Valiant kept showing off his Ubuntu and how great the functions as well as their animations. Kinda make me really jealous til one day, I bugged him to pass me the CD of Ubuntu and installed one on my laptop.

I am using laptop Dell Latitude D630. Definitely not a high end computer but what I am trying to say here, you do NOT need a high end computer to install Ubuntu 7.10.

Before you installed Ubuntu, you require:

1) 2 extra partitions of your hard disk (10 GB – for root disk and 5 GB – for swap)

2) Ubuntu CD installation either live CD or text based installation, you can get it from: Ubuntu website

3) Then just follow the installation instructions ….

First problem after installation. I need the driver for my sound card for my Dell laptop Latitude D630. HOW?

Open your terminal client and run the following command line by line

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

But if you only do the above syntax, you will get the following error:

/usr/share/fonts: failed to write cache

why is that? Apparently the driver required you to have the specific font installed. So, in your terminal client, do the following command line by line BEFORE installing your sound driver:

$ sudo bash
# wget -O folder_list.txt http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=28956&d=1175696100
# cat folder_list.txt | xargs touch
# cd /usr/share/fonts/truetype
# for i in * ; do touch ${i}; done
# cd /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d
# for i in * ; do touch ${i}; done
# apt-get dist-upgrade
